I advise farmers about their farm insurance needs by discussing with them their exposures to potential loss. I then approach different insurance companies and try to find the best fit for the farms according to their risk needs, to help protect them against severe losses, while providing the best value possible.
The insurance industry is a relatively small community in Manitoba. Whenever you go to industry events, it feels like a High School reunion! You bump into so many people that you know and haven’t seen for a while and it’s just nice to catch up with them.
I really like how we all work together and help each other out. In my office (Selkirk Main) we have a lot of experienced people and it’s nice to get their opinions on insurance-related matters. It’s almost like having an insurance company underwriter at your fingertips. We all pull in the same direction here, and it’s a wonderful place to work. Great people. If you walked into our branch for the first time, you would feel that vibe.
My desk looks like a fortress with all the files piled up! But typically, It’s best that I’m on the road out at the farms. I find that my best work is done when I can go out to my customer's farms so that I can advise them properly. One of the side benefits of working in farm insurance is that you get to see a lot of the province that you normally wouldn’t see. There are some absolutely beautiful areas in this province to go visit. My favorites are the Bruxelles area. (Between Holland, MB, and Mariapolis), and out by Minnedosa.
It’s hard to say….I’ve been here so long haha. I just like the feeling that we’ve really grown the farm insurance program at One Insurance over the past decade to the point where we’ve had to hire more people in our office to do farm insurance.
I do like to mentor others as well, and I find that quite rewarding. It was nice having Wendell Georgison and Dale McMillan help mentor me when I first began in farm insurance; so it’s nice to give back.
My children are younger, so I really enjoy watching the various activities that they are participating in. During the summer, we have a cabin out at Grand Beach and you will find me soaking up the sun rays on the beach, having a beer on the deck with friends, or heading out on the trails doing some bike riding. I LOVE Grand Beach.
…Slower is faster. Take your time to get to know your customers. Take an interest in them. Take time to ask questions. The quality of our work can greatly affect our customers' livelihoods if something bad happens to them. So it’s best to slow down and do things right.
