Options For Your Car Insurance

Published on February 5, 2021   Tips

For Manitobans it has long been assumed that all of our car insurance coverages have to be purchased through MPI (autopac). While it is mandatory for you to purchase basic coverage ($500 deductible and $200,000 liability coverage) through autopac, you are able to purchase your reduced deductible, increased liability and loss of use coverage elsewhere. While this can save you some money on your car insurance, it can also provide you with better coverage as well.

Saskatchewan Mutual Insurance (SMI) provides extension coverages in Manitoba. Some of the benefits of purchasing your extension coverages separately are:

  • Deductible options - SMI allows you to carry different deductibles for collision and comprehensive (comp) related claims. For collision and comp coverage you can choose between a $200 or $100 deductible. You also have the option to choose a $50 deductible for comp coverage. Your deductible will also be waived if you suffer vandalism type losses.
  • Loss of Use - SMI also offers a few different options for their loss of use coverage. They provide three different options for maximum limits of the cost of the rental car - $1500, $2,250 or $3,000. Loss of use coverage provides you with a rental car in the case of a claim.
  • Automatic rental car insurance - A major highlight of the SMI policy is it includes rental car insurance automatically. Your SMI policy automatically extends to any vehicle you rent within North America for a max of 30 consecutive days. This can be a huge savings if you travel regularly and need to rent a vehicle as you could be paying as much as $7 a day for rental car insurance through MPI. Also, while you’re away your car at home can still be driven by others if needed.

  • Value plus coverage - This coverage is similar to MPI’s new car protection coverage, however with SMI it is quite a bit cheaper.

  • Lay-up coverage - Another perk is that your SMI policy would provide your storage/lay-up coverage for you if you cancelled the coverage through MPI. The extra benefit is that the coverage through SMI includes collision coverage, while MPI’s policy only includes comprehensive coverage.

These are just a few of the benefits that SMI offers through the car insurance extension policy, if you would like more information, get in touch with us today!
