The Importance Of Winter Tires

Published on October 21, 2020   Tips Insurance

Winter is just around the corner which means it’s time to think about winter tires. Many people have opted to purchase winter tires since the introduction of the MPI Winter Tire finance program. MPI offers monthly payments on qualifying winter tires for up to 4 years at an interest rate of prime, plus two percent.

You can finance up to a maximum of $2,000 per vehicle, and eligible costs include:

  • Rims
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Addition of studs to tires (some limitations apply)
  • Mounting and balancing
  • Storage costs (if paid during initial purchase)
  • Switchover costs (if paid during initial purchase)
  • Wheel alignment
  • Nitrogen fill
  • Valve stems
  • Shop supplies
  • Applicable taxes and fees

Here are a few reasons why you should consider purchasing winter tires this year:

Not only for Snow and Ice
It’s often thought that winter tires are only for driving on snow or ice-covered roads, but did you know they also help in cold weather? When the weather is cold, tires can get hard which reduces your traction. Since winter tires are softer and more flexible rubber, they provide you with better traction for snow or ice-covered roads or in cold weather.

Longer Tire Life
An extra benefit of winter tires is that they will end up extending the life of your all-season tires. Since you will be using your winter tires for half the year and your all-season tires for the other half of the year, you will end up with an extended lifespan on your tires.

Maximized AWD Performance
If your vehicle has AWD, you are already experiencing better control of your vehicle during the winter season. If you add winter tires to your vehicle, you will also increase the amount of physical traction between the vehicle and the road surface.

Compromise Free
Winter tires have both a flexible rubber compound and unique tread design that's made exclusively for use on snow, slush, and ice and in cold temperatures. With no compromises made for other seasons, drivers will benefit from significantly increased traction during acceleration, notably shorter stopping distances and a drastic increase in directional stability at speed.

30 Feet
When you've got to stop for a red light at a busy intersection covered in snow and ice, that thirty feet become a very, very big deal. Thankfully, a decent set of winter tires can easily slash 30 feet or more from your stopping distances on snow, making the difference between avoiding and entering an accident.
