An insurance claim can be an extremely stressful situation and if it’s your first claim it can be a difficult situation to navigate. Whether it’s a small fire, water damage or even an ice dam claim the steps that need to be taken are all fairly similar.
Follow these steps:
Assess The Situation
The most important thing is that everyone is safe. Once you have confirmed that everyone is looked after then you need to assess the damage and see if anything can be done to prevent further loss or damage (only if it is safe to do so). Preventing further loss could include: calling the police or fire department, boarding up a window or door or even moving furniture or other property from being damaged.
Just remember that your safety is important, only make the repairs if it is safe for you to do so.
Report The Claim
It’s important for you to get in touch with your insurance broker as soon as possible. Your broker will be able to explain the coverage that is available to you and walk you through the claims process. Your insurance broker will then report the claim to the insurance company and have an insurance adjuster contact you.
Communicate With Your Adjuster
Your adjuster will help your through the insurance claim process. They will explain the steps that are required to complete the claim and assist you with filling out any of the required forms.
Document Your Claim
Pictures and making lists is an important part of your insurance claim. Take photos of the damage from your claim and make sure to do so from different angles. It is also important to document what has been damaged or stolen as well. Make a list of all the items - include the make / model and the approximate value of the item. If you have receipts for some of the items this would be a good time to put everything together.
It is important that you report your insurance claim as soon as possible. The sooner you call and report the claim, the sooner the claim can be opened and started - which means the sooner your life goes back to normal.
