Your home is likely the biggest investments you will make in your life, so protecting it is of utmost importance. Below are a few tips to help you figure out the best ways to protect your home.
If you leave an exterior door or window open (unlocked), it creates an easy entrance for burglars to your home. Whether you’re home or just running to the store, you should keep your home securely locked. For all exterior doors make sure they have deadbolt locks on them. Sliding doors should have a vertical bolt lock and you can also use a metal or wooden rod in the track to prevent it from being forced open. It’s important that you keep your home locked no matter how brief your trip away from it will be, don’t make it easy on the burglars.
If you have an attached garage it is also important to keep the connecting door locked as well. Often these doors don’t have a deadbolt installed, so consider installing one on these doors.
If you have a fence already, great! If not, building one is a great way to keep unwanted people off of your property. Solid fences can be easier to climb and can act a place for thieves to hide, while open chain-link fences provide more visibility.
If you have a garage consider keeping things like your BBQ, bikes and other expensive items in it. It may seem like a hassle to have to take your BBQ in and out of the garage when needed, but leaving it out is an invitation for it to be stolen. Keeping your car in your garage will help prevent it from being broken into or attempts at stealing it. If you can’t park in the garage make sure you keep your car locked at all times and park in well lit areas.
If you are moving into a new home make sure you have the locks changed in the home. You can never be certain if all of the copies of the keys have been returned and if not who has them. If you are renting a place, make sure you request that the landlord change all of the locks.
One of the best way to scare off potential intruders is with light. A dark home is an easier target as potential intruders can hide themselves in the dark. A motion sensor light will light up your home if someone is moving around it and if it’s a potential intruder will potentially scare them off.
One of the best ways to keep crime down in your community is to be close with your neighbours. You and your neighbours are more likely to look out for each other and will be able to spot a stranger. Plus when you are away from your home one of them can act as extra eyes on your home. You will also be able to share any suspicious activity that may be occurring in the neighbourhood.
Of course, one of the most turned to solutions for keeping your home safe is a home security system. A system will protect your exterior doors, windows and also have interior motion detectors. It is a good idea to have an outdoor alarm installed as well so that your neighbours will be alerted if there is an intruder in your home.
A system is only as good as it is used, so make sure that you activate it when you are leaving the home. It may seem like a hassle to arm and disarm the system if you are just running out for a few minutes, but it’s key to ensuring that the alarm can do its job.
